Featuring Marguerita Hagan, JJ Tiziou and Abby King who will be discussing their work and its relationship with community engagement. We ask for a sliding donation between $1-10 in order to maintain programming.
Marguerita Hagan is a ceramic sculptor based in Philadelphia. She is an advocate for the thriving of all life in mutually sustainable community and environments. The concept of interdependence plays throughout her sculpture, as well as her teaching and community arts. Hagan has exhibited nationally and internationally throughout her career. She received her BFA in Ceramics from James Madison University and her MFA from the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts.
Jacques-Jean "JJ" Tiziou is a visual artist & community organizer. His primary media are photographic images and giant pots of lentil soup, and he has never encountered an un-photogenic person in his life. JJ has been recognized as one of Philadelphia’s “Creative Connectors” by Leadership Philadelphia, and is the recipient of the Spiral-Q Artist Activist Award. He makes photographs, hosts house concerts, and has walked the full perimeter of the city (thrice). Based at The Cedar Works in West Philadelphia, JJ uses his work to build bridges across perceived boundaries and help encourage new relationships and ways of thinking.
Abby King is a visual artist and educator residing in Philadelphia. Her work deals primarily with site-specific installation and takes form through printmaking, photography and collage. Abby received her BFA in Painting from Xavier University and her MFA from the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. She has participated in numerous exhibitions around the country, most recently at Automat Gallery and Marginal Utility. She is the recipient of the Brueggemann Fellowship grant and two NewCourtland Fellowships from the Center for Emerging Visual Artists. Abby has worked in the Museum Education department at PAFA for the last four years and is now serving in her new role as Manager of Public Programs. She is the co-founder and editor of Philadelphia based magazine, Velvet Glove.
ArtistSpeak, founded Andrew Cerami and the Philly Stewards, serves as a platform to create ongoing critical engagement in the Philadelphia community between its artists, creators and the wider public.
